John Lloyd Cruz first wowed the public as a teen charmer, being the third member of the Star Magic trio The Koolits and playing the endearing Rovic in the late 90’s youth-oriented drama Tabing Ilog. But it was his breakthrough role as Yuri in the soap series Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay that definitely set his path towards bigger stardom.
Aside from showcasing John Lloyd’s potentials as a serious actor, the series also launched his on-screen romantic partnership with Bea Alonzo. Their excellent chemistry as a love team gave way to five more hit television series and eight blockbuster big screen team ups. Their last film, A Second Chance, even became the Highest Grossing Filipino Film of All Time.
John Lloyd’s heartthrob image also proved bankable opposite other leading ladies, such as Angel Locsin in Lobo and UnOfficially Yours; Sarah Geronimo in You Changed My Life and A Very Special Love; Toni Gonzaga in My Amnesia Girl and their current sitcom Home Sweetie Home; and Jennylyn Mercado in Just the 3 of Us.
While he continues to enjoy his celebrity as a top-notch leading man, John Lloyd has lately been seen venturing into more complicated films such as the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival entry Honor Thy Father and Lav Diaz’ Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis, which won the Alfred Bauer Prize at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.
