EPISODE OVERVIEW
Dayaw explores the Philippines' rich weaving designs and techniques, and the people behind their creations. Philippine textile expert Norma Respicio details the process of weaving through the Backstrap Loom and the Foot Strap Loom, and why they are used extensively by many indigenous weavers including the notable recipients of the "Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan" (GAMABA). Mindanao-based weavers Yabing Masalon Dulo and Ambalang Ausalin give their brief statements on how they mastered their craft. Museo Kordilyera director Dr. Analyn Salvador-Amores later talks about the Ikat textile from the Cordillera region, and how its tedious process made it a status symbol for the elite. The show also looks into the galleries and exhibitions dedicated to Filipino weaving, such as those mounted by the National Museum of Anthropology, Ayala Museum, Yuchengco Museum and the University of the Philippines-Baguio.
